Clause and Phrase



Clause : a group of words containing a subject and a verb.
There are two types of clauses :
*      Independent clause : is a complete sentence. It contains the main subject and verb of a sentence.
*      Dependent clause : is not complete sentence. It must be connected to an independent clause.
Kinds of clauses :
1.      Adjective clause : using subject pronouns (who,which,that).
 e.g
·         The man who can speak English will go abroad
·         The book which is in your bag is broken
·         She found a bag that is still good

2.      Noun clause : clause that has functions as noun and used as subject/object in sentence. e.g
·         What she says makes me sad.
·         I know when you buy book.
·         I don’t know where They go

3.      Adverbial clause : clause that has functions as adverb in sentence.
e.g
·         When I was in my village, I took a bath in the river.
·         He will study if  They are not noisy.
·         Because she is hungry, she eats bread.

PHRASES : a phrase is a group of related words. It does not contain a subject and a verb.
There are different types of phrases :

1.  Prepositional Phrase - (prep + noun/pron)
Examples:
                        1.  Most Australians live in large cities.
                         2.  Many cities with large factories have a smog problem.
3.  Mr. Jones presented the award to me.
4. Alice sat near her.

 2.  Infinitive Phrase - ( to + verb)
            Examples:
 1.  To run daily is healthy.
             2.  They pretend to speak Latin.
             3.  Her idea to deliver the package was approved by her mother. 

3  Other Phrases - (beginning with an ing, ed, or en word.) 

Example :
1. Dusting the furniture and washing the floors are tiresome chores.
2. Destroyed by fire, the church was never rebuilt.
3.Eaten quickly, the candies were gone before I arrived.
